Oconee was released in 1989 by the USDA and the Georgia, Louisiana, and Texas Agricultural Experiment Stations, and is a cross between the Schley and Barton cultivars. Oconee produces large, good quality fruits and begins bearing high yields at a younger age than other Pecan cultivars. The fruits are also excellent shellers, producing good, intact halves when cracked. Oconee ripens in early October, and has proven to be resistant to Pecan Scab.
