The Nero 600M fig was first discovered in the Apennine Mountains of Italy near a town called Vallecalda di Borgofomari, at an elevation of about 1,800 feet. This is important because even in the regions' quite cold winters at this elevation, this fig bears a large crop of brebas (fruit which develops in the spring on the previous year's shoot growth) and is followed by another large (main) crop which develops on the current year’s growth, ripening in the late fall or winter. Letting the figs stay on the tree too long is a problem because the skin is thicker than normal figs and will harden when the fruit is overripe.
