In 1899, an American sailor accidentally discovered that cheap port wine colored with elderberries relieved his arthritis. This may have been the basis for a number of experiments on the healing properties of this fruit.

The Nova elderberry was released in 1946 by the AgCanada station in Nova Scotia, which it was named after. It has wide clusters of creamy white flowers that appear in the spring. Produces large, tender purple berries. Fruits can be used for wine, juice, jams and jellies, or for drying. The flowers and also be dried and used for tea or wine. Responds well to pruning which is recommended to maintain a useable size. Very attractive as a food crop for wildlife. Pollinate with any other American Elderberry.
